Your first duty is to them. In my case, I changed careers about 3.5 years ago from secretarial to private auditing. But even as a secretary I changed jobs a lot and worked in a wide variety of industries and their respective departments. Maybe you're less bored with being a programmer than you are with the type of company you work for. Stay in the field but go someplace else. You really don't have a lot of options when you have the responsibility of a family. Your first duty is to them. The problem now is that all these new "surveyors" know is how to push buttons, their calculator breaks in the field they go back to the office cause they don't know how to do the math the long.
